Planning for your photography session

So you've followed my mistakes to avoid and found a photographer that:

1. Specializes in personal brand photography.

2. Includes a commercial use license.

3. Allows you to edit the photos.

4. Does not require you to credit them.

Now you want to avoid mistake #5 and have a plan for your session.

First, meet with your photographer to plan your session. It's so important that you are on the same page and have the same expectations.

Your photographer will probably have questions to help with planning your sessions such as your style, colors, emotions and moods you want to show, props that will help tell your story, and what stories you're going to be telling for the next 3 months.

Talk with your photographer about the date and time of day for the photo session. Good lighting is so important in photography so your photographer will probably have recommendations on the best time of day for photos in the different locations that you're using.

You will want to identify who your ideal client is. What do you have in common with your ideal client? What do your ideal clients have in common with each other? If you can show in pictures that you have some of the same interests that your client has, you can build the know, like, and trust factor with your clients.

Pick a location that is special to you or that matches your brand. Location ideas include your home, work space, and where you like to hang out when you're not working. If you're taking photos outdoors consider having a backup location or a possible reschedule date in case of bad weather.

Also, discuss with your photographer where you will be using these photos so that your photographer can format them for each platform. Let your photographer know if you need square photos for Instagram, wide photos for banners, profile photos, etc...

I find it can be really helpful to plan out your posts, ads, etc for the next 3 months and figure out exactly what photos you need so that you can be sure to get all the photos you need for the next 3 months.
